Design Michael Graves, 1985
Stainless steel, polyamide, magnetic steel bottom
Made in Italy by Alessi

Designed by Michael Graves in 1985, the kettle with the bird-shaped whistle became one of the icons of 20th century design. To mark the 30th anniversary of this famous kettle, Graves redesigned the whistle, turning the little bird into a charming supernatural reptile, a prehistoric, mythological and futuristic creature all at the same time: Tea Rex. The choice of the dragon is a reference on the part of the designer to the Chinese culture for whom these beings symbolize strength and fortune. The wording Tea Rex 9093 30th anniversary is stamped on the lid of the kettle. Offered with a black handle and metallic copper reptilian whistle in PA. Alessi was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi to produce crafted metal products for eating and drinking. In 1935, Carlo Alessi, son of Giovanni, was named chief designer. In 1945, he ascended to chief executive and designed the coffee service Bombe, an industrial piece manufactured in four sizes. That same year Carlo's younger brother, Ettore Alessi, joined the company as a technician. By the 1980s, Alberto Alessi took over the management of Alessi and launched the Alessi company into the design decade through collaborations with designers such as Philippe Starck and his playful three-legged Juicy Salif citrus squeezer.
