emeco lancaster stacking chair
from Emeco
emeco lancaster stacking chair
Design Michael Young, 2010
Die-cast aluminum, re-claimed solid ash wood
Made in USA by Emeco
"The sculptural form of this chair leg could only be made in wood. When I found that Emeco has partnered with a remarkable amish wood factory in Lancaster, the project gelled... I feel passionate about working with natural materials that live forever; wood and metal are really the materials that connect to the human so there was no question that the richness of their aging processes is a perfect combination." -Michael Young
Designer Michael Young contacted Emeco to initiate the back-and-forth design that resulted in Emeco's first component-based chair. Lancaster features a re-claimed, solid ash frame and recycled die-cast aluminum seat and back- an expression of industrial technique and warm materials.
Lancaster features an indestructible, cast aluminum seat and back in dark anodized and machine polished finishes. The wood legs are available in natural or dark stained ash-wood. This collection of chairs, tables and stools combines warm, crafted wood with highly technical die-cast aluminum. Includes soft plastic (TPU) glides. Stacks 6 chairs high.
20" w | 18.5" d | 30.5" h | seat: 18" h | 13.75 lbs.

Founded in 1944 by Wilton C. Dinges, the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) holds on tightly to their foundation of craftsmanship, utilitarian design, and history. Their origins lie in a collaboration with the aluminum giant Alcoa to develop an indestructible and useful chair for military use in Navy submarines and warships. Today Emeco is led by CEO Gregg Buchbinder who sums up their vision as design plus craftsmanship. Looking toward the future, Buchbinder has brought in Philippe Starck and Frank Gehry. With Starck, they developed the Hudson Chair. With Gehry, they created the acclaimed Superlight chair. In 2008, Emeco launched the Nine-O Collection by Ettore Sottsass and in the following year the Morgans chair by Andree Putman, designed for the restored Morgans Hotel.
