Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition, the Barcelona couch features the pure compositional structure that now epitomizes Modern architecture. From the hand-buffed frame to the individual leather squares carefully welted together, each Barcelona sofa is a tribute to traditional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Knoll is the only authorized and licensed manufacturer of the Barcelona Collection since 1953. Mies van der Rohe's signature is stamped into the frame of each piece to guarantee authenticity. Knoll has received trademark protection for the designs created by Mies van der Rohe, a Barcelona couch not manufactured by Knoll is a counterfeit.

The Barcelona couch features a Sapele Mahogany hardwood frame from Africa. Wood has oak-like strength and is characterized by a dark or reddish-brown color. Frame is finished with a protective clear lacquer finish. The legs are tubular steel in polished stainless steel finish. The matching bolster is secured to cushion platform with straps complete with lock snaps.

Couch contains 11 belting support straps over rubber webbing. The cowhide belting straps with front, back and side edges all stained to match specified upholstery color. Or black straps with black leather upholstery. The upholstery consists of 72 individual leather panels, cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted with leather and buttons produced from a single cowhide. Cushions are premium quality, fire-retadant, high resilient urethane foam with down-like dacron polyester fiberfill.
