portrait side chair with upholstered seat
from Herman Miller ®
portrait side chair with upholstered seat
Design Andreas Engesvik, 2021
Tubular steel frame, wood veneer, optional upholstery
Made by Herman Miller
Portrait was honored as the winner of a design competition held by the National Museum of Norway, which called for a welcoming, multifunctional chair for the museum's public spaces. The jury lauded Portrait as "a beautiful chair that adds a seductive softness and elegance to the room." It's naturally generous and comfortable, marked by precise execution and refined details that put a new twist on the ubiquitous metal-framed chair with wood seat and back.
Portrait's sinuous lines and universal forms bring forth the freer, more poetic aesthetic characteristic of Norwegian design. The geometry of the chair is naturally generous and comfortable. Precise execution and refined details present a new twist on a familiar typology of a metal-framed chair with wood backrest. Also offered with a wood seat & backrest or fully upholstered and with arms. Ganging option can be specified by calling the hive showroom. Stacks up to five chairs high.

Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son in law buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father in law as a man of integrity so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with modern furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames the company produced legendary classics of industrial design.
