bocci 28.7 random seven pendant chandelier
Design Omer Arbel, 2007
Blown glass, braided metal coaxial cable
Made in Vancouver BC by Bocci
28 is an exploration of specificity in manufacturing. Instead of designing form itself, here the intent was to design a system of making that yields form. Individual 28 pendants result from a complex glass blowing technique whereby air pressure is intermittently introduced into and then removed from a glass matrix which is intermittently heated and then rapidly cooled. The result is a distorted spherical shape with a composed collection of imploded inner shapes, one of which acts as a shade for a low voltage (12V, 20W) xenon or LED light source. 28's are possible with infinite versatility in color compositions, sizes and shapes. Each sphere contains an interior landscape of satellite shapes, including an opaque milk glass diffuser.
28.7 is a random configuration of seven 28 pendants hung from a round canopy The pendants are designed to hang in a random configuration at times clustering together and others trailing off. The result is an ambient chandelier or field of light. Each diffuser houses a low voltage lamp. 28.7 uses strain relief connections, which allow the pendant lengths to be adjusted on site. Round, brushed-nickel canopies come standard with 10' feet of coaxial cable. Additional cable lengths are available in increments of 10' feet, up to a maximum of 100' feet in special applications.
Bocci Creative Director Omer Arbel explores the intrinsic mechanical, physical, and chemical qualities of materials as fundamental departure points for making work. His interdisciplinary practice spans multiple scales and cultural-economic contexts. Omer Arbel's work has been exhibited in various museums around the world.
In 2005, Bocci was founded in a red barn surrounded by hay fields, on the periphery of Vancouver, Canada. The company launched with one product, 14, which became an instant classic and remains a design staple and bestseller. Today, Bocci has a growing portfolio of contemporary design ranging from light installations through to furniture and electrical sockets. All Bocci designs are developed, engineered, and fabricated in-house through an infrastructure calibrated to provide full control over technique, quality, and scale.
Bocci recommends mounting transformers remotely in a close, accessible and hidden location for ease of long term maintenance. Installation to be done by certified electrician to ensure code compliance. Canopy attaches directly to a standard junction box. Unless otherwise specified, one transformer is sent for every three pendants. Please note: Due to the handcrafted nature of this piece, the size, color depth, tonality, and both number & location of interior satellites will vary. The LED version is only dimmable with quantities of 3 or more fixtures on the same driver, requires a ELV compatible dimmer. Please call the hive showroom with any questions: 1-866-663-4483.
16" dia. | each pendant: 6.5" dia. | cord: 10' - 100' L max | 17.6 lbs. | ceiling canopy: 8" dia. | 1.3" h
20W xenon long life bulb or 1W 2500K, 25,000 hour life LED
LED version is only dimmable in quantities of 3 or more | approved to UL standards by CSA
