ow149-2 colonial sofa

Design Ole Wanscher, 1964
Solid wood, cotton webbing base, down mix, upholstery
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son

The reintroduced Colonial Sofa dates back to 1964 though few people know that Ole Wanscher actually designed this 2-seater Sofa at the time. The Colonial Sofa is part of the Colonial Series which also includes the classic Colonial Chair and Footrest and the newly released Colonial Coffee Table.

The series clearly reflects Wanscher's fondness for the delicate and refined as well as his fascination with furniture design from the 18th century England and bygone Colonial times.

The Colonial Sofa comes with loose cushions and the seat moves freely in the frame, which features a cotton webbing base. The cushions are turnable in fabric but not in leather. Like the Colonial Chair, the Colonial sofa is available in mahogany, cherry, walnut and oak with either fabric or leather cushions.

Carl Hansen & Son Furniture, Denmark
A workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908, was the birthplace of the Carl Hansen company. With a fast reputation for quality work, Carl Hansen confidently took on large projects like dining room sets and bedroom suites. However, Hansen eventually learned to capitalize on scaled-back versions of his popular sellers, realizing that their strongest asset was its hand craftsmanship and rationality. Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949, launching a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to the young Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today.
