barber & osgerby piton™ fixed height stool
by Barber & Osgerby, from Knoll
barber & osgerby piton™ fixed height stool
Design Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 2015
Die-cast aluminum, stainless steel, wood
Made by Knoll
A new collection of stools designed by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby for KnollStudio offers a relaxed, contemporary attitude toward interior design. Taking cues from the aesthetic principles of Modernism and pragmatic considerations of stools manufactured for sewing professionals in the mid-century era, the Piton Stool and Table are equally well suited for industrial tasks and domestic settings.
The geometric, elementary framework of the pieces is an interpretation of the familiar tripod structure; the conical base, unified by two concentric rings, guards against the potential for imbalance caused by an uneven floor, equally distributing weight so as to counteract the tendency of the stool's three-legged counterpart to wobble. The die-cast material is equally resilient to abrasions and dents.
The Barber & Osgerby Piton stools feature a robust cast aluminum base finished with a highly durable powder coat paint in a variety of colors. Please note: the painted aluminum and teak seats are approved for outdoor use when used on the fixed height stool only. The Piton stools are available with a fixed or adjustable height base.
fixed height piton stool: 14.25" w | 14.25" d | 18" h

Barber & Osgerby
London-based industrial design studio Barber & Ogersby was established in 1996 by British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. The two men met while studying for their Master's degrees in Architecture at London's Royal College of Art. Their first piece together, the Loop table, secured a relationship with Cappellini and garnered much acclaim. As a team, their multidisciplinary portfolio now encompasses furniture, lighting and product design as well as art and architectural-scale projects. They are both Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) and are past recipients of the Jerwood Applied Arts prize. Both are Honorary Doctors of Arts, and Osgerby is an Honorary Fellow of Ravensbourne. The pair have lectured internationally and their work is held in permanent collections around the world including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; London’s Design Museum; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Significant recent projects include the Tip Ton chair for Vitra (2011) and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Torches.
Hans Knoll founded the Knoll company in New York City in 1938 one year after immigrating from Germany. He hired Florence Schust who had worked for Gropius and Breuer and the two were married in 1946. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe including the Barcelona Chair. Knoll commissioned Eero Saarinen to design the Tulip chair. Artists such as Harry Bertoia, Jens Risom, and Isamu Noguchi also collaborated with Knoll.
