Konstantin Grcic creates industrial products widely described as pared down, simple, minimalist. Konstantin Grcic

Konstantin Grcic (b. 1965, Munich) trained as a cabinet maker at Parnham College in England and studied design at the Royal college of Art in London from 1988 to 1990. He then founded the KGID office (Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design) in 1991, which led to commissions from leading firms in furniture, design, and architecture. Grcic creates industrial products widely described as pared down, simple, essential, or minimalist. His take on minimalism differs from the current fashion in its function in human terms, combining maximum formal strictness with considerable mental acuity and humor.
The furniture manufacturers and entrepreneurs Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina founded Flos which became one of the leading Italian light manufacturers in the second half of the 20th century. Its origins lay in the energy of Arturo Eisenkeil who, in 1959, was seeking to find applications for a new, plastic-based material that he was importing to Italy from the United States. Called cocoon™, it was a spray-on plastic coating that Gavina and Cassina recognized as having potential for lighting design. From the outset, Flos established its reputation through its innovative lighting designs from Achille Castiglioni. The collaboration with Achille Castiglioni continued through the '90s, and in 1992 he introduced the "family of products" concept to the market with the Brera series. At the same time, Flos continued to scout for emerging talent at an international level. The first Philippe Starck lamp was produced in 1998, followed by the Miss Sissi lamp, Romeo Moon, and Archimoon series.

Versitele Modern Lamp
Cameron, more than a month ago.
I have purchased 6 of these lamps over the years.
They are the most versatile, modern ,and minimal lamps I have purchase.
I move them around and sometimes group a few of them together and sometimes use them individually. Easy to move to any location and looks great.

Unique design, utilitarian lamp

The May Day lamp has a nice glow and it beckons to be moved around from floor to take to a hook on the wall. The lamp is attractive from every angle. I do wish the materials were just a touch sturdier. The handle is made of thick polypropylene but the cone shade seems a bit lighter in gauge. Definitely a fun lamp but still has a bit of a plastic feel. Still, for the price and design aspect, I'd take the May Day Lamp over many other alternatives.

Form follows function.

Simple elegant, purpose-driven design. Also, durable, versatile, and effective. I have two of these Mayday lamps, with high lumen LED bulbs, hanging from the rafters in a garden shed. They're beautiful.
