ch401 kastrup chair
by Hans Wegner, from Carl Hansen & Son
ch401 kastrup chair
Design Hans Wegner, 1958
Stainless steel, upholstery
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son
Through the 1960s and further through to the 1970s and 80s - the 'The Kastrup Chair' has been part of the interior of international airports, public offices, hotels and private homes in different configurations.
Wegner once remarked: "First and foremost a chair must be comfortable and it must be cared for by the finest craftsmen and not least a chair must also be shaped well." These are simple characteristics, which Hans J. Wegner has always adhered to. The structure of the 'The Kastrup Chair' is based on a blind frame in solid beech wood with legs in stainless steel.
Hans J Wegner trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller's architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office in Gentofte and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers' Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The Royal Society of Arts, London made him an 'Honorary Royal Designers for Industry' in 1959.

Hans Wegner
Hans Wegner’s thoughtful high quality work contributed to the popularity of Danish Modern design. His style is described as Organic Functionalism. He designed over 500 different chairs with many famous icons among them. Wegner worked as a cabinet maker's apprentice and soon attended the Danish School of Arts & Crafts and the Architectural Academy.
Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949 and launched a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to Hans Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today as a Master of Danish Modern Design.
