dune tray
by Mario Bellini, from Kartell
dune tray
Design Mario Bellini, 2009
Batch-dyed technopolymer
Made in Italy by Kartell
What good is a tray if it doesn't say something to the viewer, to the person examining it, using it? Who is going to remember it? What good is a tray if it's only good for carrying things?
The semi-transparent polycarbonate of these trays sculpted from within varies in chromatic intensity and luminosity and projects a magical three-dimensional illusion onto the surface holding glasses and cups. Images fluctuate and flow in these trays. Like mountain torrents, rivers of lava, fiery flames. Animated images of the caprices of wind and light. Like the waves on the sea, desert dunes or the shimmering reflections of silk. These rainbow-colored trays are the first born of a family of small objects. Invented and designed to delight you with unexpected emotions.
Since the 1960's, the versatile Mario Bellini has been celebrated for his pioneering industrial designs for companies such as Olivetti, Kartell, Cassina, Artemide, B&B Italia, Heller, Renault, Rosenthal, Vitra, and Yamaha. Mario Bellini has won several Compasso d'Oro awards. Twenty-five of Bellini's elegant creations are in the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which honored him with a one-man show in 1987.
Dune tray is suitable for use indoors or outdoors.
small tray: 12.6" L | 18.1" w | 2.9 lbs.
large tray: 15" L | 21.7" w | 5.1 lbs.

Mario Bellini
Like many other Italian architects, Mario Bellini (b. 1935) also works in urban planning, as well as product and furniture design. He began as an architect in the early 1960s after graduating from the Milan Polytechnic - Faculty of Architecture. Some of his most popular designs remain in New York’s MoMA, including many business machines for Olivetti (for whom he was chief design consultant from '63 to '91), his famous "cab" chair for Cassina, and other renowned furniture for B&B and Vitra. From there, his design work expanded to TV sets for Brionvega, stereos and electric organs for Yamaha, and a 5-year stint as an automobile design consultant for Renault, while also designing for Fiat and Lancia cars.
The Kartell image and history are best described through the company's products. The development, corporate strategies, attention paid to technology and design can be appreciated by observing the products Kartell has produced. Kartell products express the language and the atmosphere of the period in which they were created and at the same time they are "contemporary articles". They incorporate many values and messages and this is why they have become an integral part of our design world.
