Design Maya Lin, 1998
Polyethylene
Made in USA by Knoll

"At the heart of this furniture collection for Knoll is my love for the land...it goes back to a childhood fascination we all have-that moment when you discover that the earth is round...and you walk around trying to see that curve." -Maya Lin

In celebration of their 60th anniversary, Knoll introduced the Maya Lin collection. As her first furniture for production, Stones was part of "the earth is (not) flat" collection. Reflecting the artist's ongoing exploration of the relationship betweeen humans and the earth. Stones offers a low, monolithic ellipse of colored polyethylene as sculpture. Each piece has the simple, elliptical shapes and subtle curves that appear in much of the artist's oeuvre.

The Stones collection is available as a child's seat, adult seat and coffee table, in your choice of colors. The seats are available with optional cushion in various upholstery fabrics. For use indoors or out. With proper care and limited exposure to the elements, Stones without seat pads are suitable for outdoor use. Remove water in the concave seats to avoid permanent stains. White patina may appear on surface. During cool or inclement weather, it is recommended to bring Stones inside.

Note: coffee table top surface is slightly convex.

Coffee table: 32" w | 15" h | 22.5" d | 26.5lbs.

Hans Knoll founded the Knoll company in New York City in 1938 one year after immigrating from Germany. He hired Florence Schust who had worked for Gropius and Breuer and the two were married in 1946. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe including the Barcelona Chair. Knoll commissioned Eero Saarinen to design the Tulip chair. Artists such as Harry Bertoia, Jens Risom, and Isamu Noguchi also collaborated with Knoll.
