bocci 28.6 floor lamp
Design Omer Arbel, 2019
Blown glass, unlacquered brass or black powder coated base
Made in Vancouver BC by Bocci
28 is an exploration of specificity in manufacturing. Instead of designing form itself, here the intent was to design a system of making that yields form. Individual 28 globes result from a complex glass blowing technique whereby air pressure is intermittently introduced into and then removed from a glass matrix which is intermittently heated and then rapidly cooled. The result is a distorted spherical shape with a composed collection of imploded inner shapes, one of which acts as a shade for a low voltage LED light source. 28's are possible with infinite versatility in color compositions, sizes and shapes. Each sphere contains an interior landscape of satellite shapes, including an opaque milk glass diffuser.
The 28.6 floor comes in a black powder coated or brass finish with a 350mm (13.8") diameter base. The semi-rigid black fabric cord includes a patented integral 360 degree dimming system housed within a sleek brass cylinder. The brass used in the Stem Series is untreated and, as such, will develop a natural patina over time. To avoid any marking or tarnish on the brass during handling and installation, please use the gloves provided in your shipment.
Bocci Creative Director Omer Arbel explores the intrinsic mechanical, physical, and chemical qualities of materials as fundamental departure points for making work. His interdisciplinary practice spans multiple scales and cultural-economic contexts. Omer Arbel's work has been exhibited in various museums around the world. In 2005, Bocci was founded in a red barn surrounded by hay fields, on the periphery of Vancouver, Canada. The company launched with one product, 14, which became an instant classic and remains a design staple and bestseller. Today, Bocci has a growing portfolio of contemporary design ranging from light installations through to furniture and electrical sockets. All Bocci designs are developed, engineered, and fabricated in-house through an infrastructure calibrated to provide full control over technique, quality, and scale.
Please note: Due to the handcrafted nature of this piece, the size, color depth, tonality, and both number & location of interior satellites will vary. Please call the hive showroom with any questions: 1-866-663-4483.
