eames® walnut stool

Design Charles & Ray Eames, 1960
Solid walnut
Made by Herman Miller

"You know what looks good can change, but what works works."
-Ray Eames

Ray Eames drew on her training as a sculptor to design a new kind of occasional piece for the lobby of the Time-Life Building in New York City. Eames walnut stools became her favorite seats and were liberally scattered about the Charles and Ray Eames home in Pacific Palisades. Made of solid walnut, these stools can be used anywhere and are beautifully versatile. Besides being places to sit, they also serve as low tables, display surfaces, or simply objects of art to be admired.

A museum curator once ordered two of these stools for his son and daughter. "Graduation gifts?" he was asked. "No," he said, "the kids are only five and three. But I want them to have the experience of growing up with something truly good that they can keep all their lives."

With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."

The Eames stools are solid walnut and the center section of the stool comes in three distinctively sculpted profiles. The top surface and the smaller bottom surface are both concave.

Charles and Ray Eames

Husband and wife team Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames played a major role in the world of modern architecture and furniture, as well as working in industrial and graphic design, fine art, and film. Charles completed two years of study at Washington University in St. Louis. With his design and life partner Ray, he designed prize-winning furniture that expanded upon the wood molding techniques of Alvar Aalto. Ray-Bernice Alexandra Kaiser Eames began as an abstract expressionist painter, having graduated from Bennett Women's College in Millbrook, NY and later studying under Hans Hoffman while living in New York City. She co-founded the American Abstract Artists and has a painting in the Whitney museum's permanent collection.
Herman Miller
Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company, which opened in 1905, since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of integrity, so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century, the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with modern furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the company produced pieces that would become classics of industrial design.

This is my second purchase from Hive of the eames' walnut stool and I couldn't be happier. Excellent service, speedy delivery and most of all, lovely workmanship on an iconic piece of MCM furniture. People can comfortably perch on them for larger gatherings but I also use them as side tables. (I place a book on top for a more-stable platform.) They are a beautiful, sculptural presence in the room, that is also functional. I love them! Thank you, Hive!

Beautiful multi use sculptures
Richard, more than a month ago.
Endlessly functional as a small side table, display surface, extra seating or just incredible piece of sculptural art. Incredibly well made, of substantial weight, and with care can last a lifetime and then some.

Great but be careful
Stephen, more than a month ago.
I have 4 of these and love the look and feel of them. I have used them as small side tables more than stools but work well for either. One of mine has multiple indentations and scratches from where my young son had been spinning a top on it. The wood is obviously softer than expected and prone to obvious wear and tear.
