The Chiara lamp, designed by Mario Bellini for Flos in 1969, is an iconic design formed from a simple sheet of polished stainless steel that has been cut and rolled into a cylinder. This origami-like structure hides a lighting source - updated to LED in this re-edition - placed on the floor. The light it provides is reflected and diffused by a large 'hat,' which resembles a nun's wimple and veil.
The re-edition of Chiara uses cutting-edge technology and comprises 2 models: the classic floor lamp in stainless steel with black edges and a new smaller table model in a variety of finishes - aluminum with anthracite edges, dark grey with olive green edges, and pink gold with red edges.
Floor version is not UL listed.

Mario Bellini
Like many other Italian architects, Mario Bellini (b. 1935) also works in urban planning, as well as product and furniture design. He began as an architect in the early 1960s after graduating from the Milan Polytechnic - Faculty of Architecture. Some of his most popular designs remain in New York’s MoMA, including many business machines for Olivetti (for whom he was chief design consultant from '63 to '91), his famous "cab" chair for Cassina, and other renowned furniture for B&B and Vitra. From there, his design work expanded to TV sets for Brionvega, stereos and electric organs for Yamaha, and a 5-year stint as an automobile design consultant for Renault, while also designing for Fiat and Lancia cars.
The furniture manufacturers and entrepreneurs Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina founded Flos which became one of the leading Italian light manufacturers in the second half of the 20th century. Its origins lay in the energy of Arturo Eisenkeil who, in 1959, was seeking to find applications for a new, plastic-based material that he was importing to Italy from the United States. Called cocoon, it was a spray-on plastic coating that Gavina and Cassina recognized as having potential for lighting design. From the outset, Flos established its reputation through its innovative lighting designs from Achille Castiglioni. The collaboration with Achille Castiglioni continued through the '90s, and in 1992 he introduced the "family of products" concept to the market with the Brera series. At the same time, Flos continued to scout for emerging talent at an international level. The first Philippe Starck lamp was produced in 1998, followed by the Miss Sissi lamp, Romeo Moon, and Archimoon series.
