sarpaneva cast iron pot

Design Timo Sarpaneva, 1960
Cast iron and wood
Made by Iittala

Professor Timo Sarpaneva's grandfather was a blacksmith and being around molten metal in his childhood inspired the designer to recreate a popular version of the ancient cast-iron pot.

A cult object of Finnish design. The Sarpaneva cast iron pot, sought after by collectors, is now back in production. An excellent example of the ability of Finnish design to combine practicality and beauty. This pot became such a favorite that it was featured on one of a collection of postage stamps celebrating the Finnish design elite.

The Sarpaneva pot is a combination of tradition, functionalism and polished aesthetics. It is a basic object for the home that you can lift from the stove straight to the table. Its distinguishing innovative feature is the detachable wooden handle you use to open the lid and lift the pot. The excellent qualities of the enameled cast-iron pot on the stove, in the oven and when serving, complete perhaps the most beautiful cast-iron pot in the world.

The Sarpaneva cast iron pot has won several design awards, including the silver medal at the 1960 Milan Triennal.

Born in Helsinki, Timo Sarpaneva is one of the great personalities responsible for the world reputation of Finnish design since the 1950s. He is a master of materials as glass, porcelain, cast iron and textile as well as graphic art.

Timo Sarpaneva

Finnish design Timo Sarpaneva was best known in the art world for innovative work in glass, which often merged attributes of display art objects with utilitarian designations. While glass remained his most commonly addressed medium, he worked with metal, wood, textiles, and porcelain. Sarpaneva has entered homes around the world through his upscale, artistically conceived items, including cast-iron cookware and porcelain dinnerware. His work was among the key components that helped to launch Finland's reputation as a trailblazer of design.
What started as a glass factory in Iittala, Finland, now celebrates generations of essential objects that are made to enrich people's everyday lives. Iittala believes objects should be distinctive, combinable and multi-functional, with lasting design that allows for individual use and expression. The progressive philosophy of design heroes, Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto, still inspires to keep Iittala forever relevant. Iittala creates beautiful objects... timeless design that will never be thrown away.
