halves side table
Design MSDS Studio, 2017
Acrylic stone composite
Made by Muuto
"The Halves table is youthful and informal in its aesthetics, but represents more traditional values of durability and practicality simultaneously. We were inspired by the unique properties of the solid surface material which led to the specific exploration of form with an emphasis on planes and intersections. We further wanted to pursue a form that was practical, yet somewhat abstract, and therefore played with asymmetry: Halves presents different aspects of itself over time, depending on the position of the observer." -MSDS Studio
Made from a unique combination of acrylic and stone, the Halves Side table is a sculptural display table that is a fit for any setting; next to the bed or sofa, in a hallway or an office.
MSDS Studio is a Toronto based furniture, lighting, and interior design practice run by Jessica Nakanishi and Jonathan Sabine. Their work is a synthesis of Jessica's experience in interior design and Jonathan's background in furniture and cabinet making. They were named Canadian product designers of the year in 2015. Jonathan's bottle opener design is in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The Halves table is made from large casted sheets of acrylic stone composite, that are cut into shapes and welded together. Lastly, the surfaces are grinded and polished giving the side table its soft feel and seamless joints.
