Design Bodil Kjaer, 1959
Untreated solid teak wood
Made by Carl Hansen & Son

For Bodil Kjær, designing has always involved a dialogue with architecture, and her work has always been created for humans. She has worked to create harmony between design and architecture - an ambition that, in 1959, resulted in an elegant outdoor furniture series characterized by such high functional and aesthetic qualities, that it was also suitable for indoor use. The furniture has a clear identity, an evident simplicity, and is based on high-quality materials and superior craftsmanship.

The Indoor-Outdoor series consists of a lounge chair, a small table whose height matches that of the lounge chair, a dining table, a dining chair, a two-seater lounge sofa, a swing sofa, and a sunbed - all inspired by the Cubist idiom, which has proven its enduring visual appeal. Carl Hansen & Søn is now relaunching Kjær's classic series in solid teak, which withstands changeable weather conditions, patinates beautifully, and lends itself to both outdoor and indoor use.

As this untreated teak wood is a natural product, variations in color and pigmentation will occur. Wooden furniture will also change appearance over time as it is affected by the environment in which it is placed.

Bodil Kjaer

Danish professor and architect Bodil Kjær has significantly contributed to the spread of Danish Modern design principles through her travels, knowledge gathering and promotion of the relationship between design and architecture. Kjær views furniture construction from a purely technical perspective, interplayed with modern architecture and created for people. She always considers context and has collaborated with different professions in her desire to optimize physical settings.
Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949 and launched a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to Hans Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today as a Master of Danish Modern Design.
