fk11 plico chair

Design Jorgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius, 1963
Solid wood, steel, foam, canvas, saddle leather
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son

When designing the Plico Chair, Danish design duo Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm sought to create a chair that takes up as little space as possible when not in use while not compromising on comfort. Looking to highlight what other designers often seek to hide, they created a deceptively simple design with visible joints, beautiful brass fittings and accomplished craftsmanship.

Available in a high (FK10) and low (FK11) back version, the solid oak frame and curved rear legs are shaped for stability. The back and seat, fitted with corresponding cushions, are upholstered in stitched linen canvas to provide an elegant expression and supreme sitting comfort. The adjustable backrest folds completely and saddle leather armrests complete the design, giving it a distinctive expression full of character.

Please note that FK11 is only available in natural canvas (100% linen). The armrests and straps are only available in natural saddle leather.

FK11: 29.1" h | 29.1" w | 33.5" d | seat front: 14.6" h

Kastholm & Fabricius

Trained cabinet-maker Preben Fabricius met blacksmith Jorgen Kastholm at the School for Interior Design and found a common approach to furniture design - never wanting to compromise on aesthetics. In 1961, the pair set up a design studio in a Gentofte cellar without any firm arrangements with manufacturers, but by ‘65 they had secured a lucrative deal with German furniture manufacturer Alfred Kill. The next year, their international breakthrough came at the Cologne Fair with a whole series of office and home furniture, leading to orders from ten large furniture concerns. Among their most successful works were the Tulip Chair, Grasshopper Chair, and Scimitar Chair, which highlighted their style of minimalist designs, both attractive and comfortable, usually in steel and leather. The pieces of furniture they produced during their seven-year period of cooperation from 1961 to 1968 were so distinctive that many are still produced today as classics.
Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949 and launched a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to Hans Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today as a Master of Danish Modern Design.
