alfi low back stool

Design Jasper Morrison, 2015
Re-claimed polypropylene & wood fiber, solid ash wood
Made in USA by Emeco

"Alfi was inspired by the woven cane brasserie chairs you see out everywhere on Parisian sidewalks. The Emeco wood filled reclaimed polypropylene seat combines beautifully with the ash wooden leg structures, providing a rich play of materials and finishes. It's one of the most comfortable chairs I have designed." -Jasper Morrison

Emeco and Morrison together, designed and engineered the Alfi collection with the conviction that what you don't see is as important as what you do see. Alfi reflects Emeco and Morrison's common appreciation for the invisible qualities behind simplicity. Made of reclaimed and responsibly selected materials, engineered for comfort and strength, and designed to be humble and timeless, Alfi embodies these hidden values.

With Alfi, Emeco continues its exploration of using reclaimed and recycled waste to make long-lasting products. Alfi seats are made of 100% reclaimed post-industrial waste - 92.5% polypropylene combined with 7.5% wood fiber. Seats may be selected from the subtle palette of earth tones, while the base can be specified in either natural or dark stained ash wood. Includes soft plastic (TPU) glides.

Optional upholstered slipcover with a structured foam cushion that slips over the seat and fits tight and secured once dressed. Designed to be retrofitted and removed when needed.

Please note: The seat is made from 100% reclaimed materials - polypropylene mixed with wood fiber. The wood particles create a speckled texture that gives the surface a warmer, more natural touch. Lighter colors show the contrast of wood fibers more.

Jasper Morrison

Jasper Morrison (b. 1959) is an English product and furniture designer from London. He received a Bachelor of Design degree from Kingston Polytechnic Design School in 1982 and a Masters degree in Design from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1985. He also studied at the Berlin University of the Arts, formerly the Hochschule der Künste (HdK). While a student, he gained a keen interest in modernist pioneers, such as Buckminster Fuller, Gerald Summers, Jean Prouvé and Le Corbusier. Morrison's objects provide a quiet contrast to the creative exuberance of the Eighties. The visual restraint, high functionalism and constructive simplicity attract attention to his work.
Founded in 1944 by Wilton C. Dinges, the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) holds on tightly to their foundation of craftsmanship, utilitarian design, and history. Their origins lie in a collaboration with the aluminum giant Alcoa to develop an indestructible and useful chair for military use in Navy submarines and warships. Today Emeco is led by CEO Gregg Buchbinder who sums up their vision as design plus craftsmanship. Looking toward the future, Buchbinder has brought in Philippe Starck and Frank Gehry. With Starck, they developed the Hudson Chair. With Gehry, they created the acclaimed Superlight chair. In 2008, Emeco launched the Nine-O Collection by Ettore Sottsass and in the following year the Morgans chair by Andree Putman, designed for the restored Morgans Hotel.
