Design Philippe Starck, 2002
Injection-molded polycarbonate
Made in Italy by Kartell

As one of the best-known contemporary designers, Philippe Starck has placed honesty and integrity at the core of his designs producing quality products with longevity & durability.

Starck's work does not concentrate on the creation of provocative and expensive single pieces. Instead his product designs are of usable household items who Starck himself helps to market for mass production. His products are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look.

The relationship between Kartell and Philippe Starck sometimes becomes a real desire for transgression and challenge, of aesthetic and cultural provocation. The creative genius of the artist and Kartell's unequalled engineering and technological competence have produced, yet again, a cult product. A Louis XV style chair in transparent and colored polycarbonate: revisited baroque ideatype, to astonish, excite and fascinate. The Louis Ghost chair is the most daring example in the world of polycarbonate injection in a single mold.

The creation of this project was an authentic, technological challenge for Kartell, both the particular shape of the medallion-shaped back and the arms presented considerable difficulty. Evanescent and crystalline, like the progenitor of the series, La Marie, the Louis Ghost chair is stable, robust, and resistant to all blows, scratches, and weather conditions. A chair with a strong, charismatic personality of guaranteed aesthetic appeal. Suitable for indoor/outdoor use. Sold in sets of two chairs of the same color.

Please note Louis Ghost chairs now use a Polycarbonate 2.0. Namely a material that combines a second-generation renewable polymer produced through a synthesis process that partly comes from industrial waste of cellulose and ISCC* (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certified paper, assuring a reduction of up to 60% of the environmental impact in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, with respect to fossil-based polycarbonate production.

Philippe Starck

Paris-born Philippe Patrick Starck (b. 1949) has a wide range of design, but is very well known for his consumer goods and interiors. He was educated in Paris at the École Camondo and founded his first design firm, which specialized in inflatable objects, in 1968. The next year, he became art director of his firm along with Pierre Cardin. He has worked both independently as an interior designer and as a product designer since 1975. After designing the private apartment interiors for French President François Mitterrand in 1982, his career began to climb significantly. In 1986 he joined Domus Academy Department of Design as an associate lecturer. Two of Starck's famous designs include stylized toothbrushes (1989) and a sleek juicer dubbed the Juicy Salif created for Alessi in 1990. The Juicy Salif has become an affordable and popular cult item.
The Kartell image and history are best described through the company's products. The development, corporate strategies, attention paid to technology and design can be appreciated by observing the products Kartell has produced. Kartell products express the language and the atmosphere of the period in which they were created and at the same time they are "contemporary articles". They incorporate many values and messages and this is why they have become an integral part of our design world.
