Magis Dish Doctor

Design Marc Newson, 1998
Injection-moulded polyethylene
Made in Italy by Magis

From the genius of Marc Newson comes the dish doctor... a dish drainer for the stalwart aesthete. Durable, chic and functional, a perfect combo.

To quote Marc: "I controlled every aspect of this project, even the packaging, and it was an instant hit. We used rapid prototyping technology to go virtually straight from the screen to tooling without any modifications. It is made from the same polypropylene as ordinary dishracks, but the Magis production standards are so high that the finish is absolutely beautiful."

Marc Newson

Marc Andrew Newson CBE (b. 1963) of Sydney, Australia (now based in London), is a successful industrial designer who works in aircraft design, product design, furniture design, jewelry, and clothing. He incorporates a design style known as biomorphism, which uses smooth flowing lines, translucency, transparency, and tends to have an absence of sharp edges. In 1984, Newson graduated from the Sydney College of the Arts in jewelry and sculpture. In 1986 he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council and staged a first exhibition featuring the Lockheed Lounge. The following year he moved to Tokyo, where he lived and worked until he moved to Paris in 1991 and set up a studio.
The Magis company was founded in 1976 and had their first success in 1984 with “Step,” a ladder that was influential and crossed over into the designer furniture market from the hardware stores. They had two more huge successes in 1994 with Jasper Morrison’s “Bottle” and the “Lyra” stool from the Italia Group, their bestseller. Two years later, the “Bombo” stool designed by Stefano Giovannoni would gain enormous success and cultivate an imitable style. Once the company gained momentum, they never slowed and would go on to produce Jasper Morrison’s technologically advanced “Air-Chair,” Michael Young’s “Dog House,” Konstantin Grcic’s “Chair One,” the “Me Too” line of children’s objects and furniture, and the “Striped” family from the Bouroullec brothers.

fun and functional
, more than a month ago.
To remind myself of a lovely stay at a CA airbnb, marvelous in every way and with this enchanting little piece in the kitchen, I purchased this little treasure...the host told me where to find it. It makes people smile when they come into my kitchen, and it charms me with my own happy CA memories. And did I mention it's extremely functional?

My Second One!
, more than a month ago.
This was the second Dish Doctor I've purchased, only because my son wanted my old one. It's a unique design, easy to clean (it comes apart to drain & clean) & worth the money as it lasts a long time. I purchased the Translucent color both times. Great looking on your counter, too.
