Aplomb Large Suspension Lamp

from foscarini

aplomb large suspension lamp

aplomb large suspension lamp

Design Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere, 2016
Concrete, aluminum, polycarbonate
Made in Italy by Foscarini

Aplomb Large is a new lamp made of concrete, but with a different shape and use from the original version. Apart from being larger in size, Aplomb Large is fitted with a built-in LED light source, placed into the body of the lamp, which casts a wide beam of light onto the surface underneath, unlike the original Aplomb version which instead stands out for its accent lighting. Aplomb is made by Italian experts through a craft-based process of concrete processing. The challenge at the heart of this project was to obtain slim thicknesses, light-weight shapes and a textured surface, still pleasant to touch. It was all achieved thanks to the painstaking care and profound knowledge of the raw material, which allowed the creation of a special mix, particularly fluid when poured into the cast. It is available in three colors - white, grey and brown - made with pigments added directly to the material blend, in order to answer different setting requirements.

Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere got together at well-known design offices in Milan. In 2002 they signed their first commissions together and, in 2006, establish Studio Lucidi & Pevere in Milan. These days, Studio Lucidi & Pevere is based in Udine and still undertakes industrial design work for internationally renowned companies, belonging to a large number of different sectors.

Aplomb large is a suspension lamp with direct light. Cement diffuser, consisting off a special amalgam colored with pigments, produced by pouring the fluid mixture into a mold rose with galvanized metal bracket and batch-dyed ABS cover. Black electrical cable and canopy for the brown and grey version, white for the white version. Aplomb Large can be placed over a table, a kitchen island or a counter, at home or in a public place, and it is perfect for use on its own or repeated in linear compositions.

Riccardo Olivieri set up Foscarini Spa in Murano in 1981. Two years later, they debuted their catalog, with lamps from Carlo Urbinati and Allesandro Vecchiato, who would become the company's managers by 1988. Eventually these new owners would move the company off the island and into Venice, as well as transition Foscarini from a glassworks shop to a major design competitor. They had already begun working with external designers in 1985, but their first success came in 1990 with Rodolfo Dordoni's "Lumiere" Most all lighting projects were made of glass until 1993, at which point the Havana lamp primarily used polyethylene, making it lighter, more cost-effective, and able to be used indoors and outdoors. It now resides in the MoMA in New York. Other successful lamps would come to define the company, such as the "Mite & Tite" series by Marc Sadler in 2000 (which earned a Compasso d'oro), Patricia Urquiola's 2005 "Caboche" and Marc Sadler's signature lamp "Twiggy."
