Magis Sam Son Easy Chair

magis sam son easy chair

magis sam son easy chair

Design Konstantin Grcic, 2015
Polyethylene
Made in Italy by Magis

Sam Son is an easy armchair with a hint of a cartoon character. Propped up on 4 stilt legs, the chair features a softly suspended seat shell between a giant, horseshoe-shaped element, the chair's characteristic armrest and backrest. Made from two different rotational moldings, the chair combines a rigid plastic for its base and a more elastic polymer for the upper part. The exaggerated dimension of the armrest and backrest provides comfort and support, and creates a protective space for sitting. Sam Son comes in 4 different colors and is suitable for both indoors and outdoors.

Konstantin Grcic was born in Munich, Germany in 1965. After training as a cabinet maker at Parnham College in England he studied design at the Royal College of Art in London from 1988-1990. Konstantin Grcic creates industrial products widely described as pared down, simple, minimalist. What sets him apart from the minimalism in fashionable currency today is that he defines function in human terms, combining maximum formal strictness with considerable mental acuity and humor.

Konstantin Grcic

Konstantin Grcic (b. 1965, Munich) trained as a cabinet maker at Parnham College in England and studied design at the Royal college of Art in London from 1988 to 1990. He then founded the KGID office (Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design) in 1991, which led to commissions from leading firms in furniture, design, and architecture. Grcic creates industrial products widely described as pared down, simple, essential, or minimalist. His take on minimalism differs from the current fashion in its function in human terms, combining maximum formal strictness with considerable mental acuity and humor.
The Magis company was founded in 1976 and had their first success in 1984 with “Step,” a ladder that was influential and crossed over into the designer furniture market from the hardware stores. They had two more huge successes in 1994 with Jasper Morrison’s “Bottle” and the “Lyra” stool from the Italia Group, their bestseller. Two years later, the “Bombo” stool designed by Stefano Giovannoni would gain enormous success and cultivate an imitable style. Once the company gained momentum, they never slowed and would go on to produce Jasper Morrison’s technologically advanced “Air-Chair,” Michael Young’s “Dog House,” Konstantin Grcic’s “Chair One,” the “Me Too” line of children’s objects and furniture, and the “Striped” family from the Bouroullec brothers.
