Design Verner Panton, 1973
Brushed aluminum, foam rubber, iron frame, upholstery
Made in Denmark by VerPan ApS.

"I wanted to design furniture that grows up out of the floor – to turn the furniture into something organic and never with four legs." -Verner Panton

Verpan introduces two chairs from the original 1-2-3 series designed by Verner Panton in 1973. The series originally comprised 20 different models with variations in seat height, arm rests and feet. The public was very enthusiastic about the chairs at the time, and one critic wrote: "It (the furniture series) will be a milestone in future furniture design... We have never before seen chairs designed and built like the 20 models that make up this series."

The original commission was to design a furniture program that combined a series of different functions with the basic requirement of good sitting comfort. The chairs should also have a simple and natural design, so they could fit into any environment as a functional element. It took Verner Panton three years to develop the series, and the result was a unique chair concept where Panton worked systematically with design and function based on a defined theme.

The chair originally featured a light frame construction made from steel upon which fabric could be mounted. In the new version, Verpan has used foam rubber for increased sitting comfort and to ensure a tight and even upholstering. Verpan intends to add more models to the series over the next few years.

The current series includes a dining room chair and a lounge chair - both models are available in a standard version and also a tufted deluxe version. The dining chair is also offered with a choice of a standard disc base or butterfly foot. Please call the hive showroom with any questions: 1-866-663-4483.

Verner Panton

Verner Panton (1926 – 1998) of Denmark created innovative, futuristic designs in vibrant colors with a variety of materials, especially plastic. Though his style was very "1960s," he regained popularity at the end of the 20th century. As of 2004, his most of his well-known furniture models are still in production. Already an experienced artist, Panton studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, graduating in 1951. During the first two years of his career, 1950–1952, he worked at the architectural practice of Arne Jacobsen, another Danish architect and furniture designer. Panton started his own design and architectural office and became well known for his innovative architectural proposals, including a collapsible house (1955), the Cardboard House and the Plastic House (1960). In the mid-1950's, Panton converted a Volkswagen bus into a mobile studio and travelled across Europe. He returned to Denmark in 1958 full of unconventional ideas, one of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. In 1960 Panton was the designer of the very first single-form injection-molded plastic chair. The Stacking chair or S chair, became his most famous design and was mass-produced.
One of the true rebels and pioneers in the world of lighting and furniture design, Verner Panton is an icon. True to his vision, his creative language shocked surroundings when he started designing and continues to leave people amazed today. Adding a touch of Panton instantly transforms a room. For many years Verpan has produced his famous lamps, carefully merging quality and originality.
