grete jalk gj bow chair

Design Grete Jalk, 1963
Laminated plywood
Made in Denmark by Lange Production

Designed by Grete Jalk (1920-2006) in 1963, this Laminated Chair is regarded today as the Danish designer's best-known work. The chair, for which Jalk also created a companion side table, was realized in collaboration with the cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen. Although it won first prize in a competition organized by the British newspaper Daily Mail during the year of its inception, the chair never went into industrial production.

The expressive sculptural form of the chair, composed of two similarly shaped pieces of molded plywood, marks a late highlight in the engagement of prominent designers with this material, which had commenced in the 1930s.

Due to the complexity of the chair's design, only around 300 copies were originally produced. Only a few remain in existence today. Lange Production was chosen and authorized to launch the furniture in two wood finishes, walnut and black stained ash wood.

Grete Jalk's honesty and genuine interest in every aspect of quality has made her the conscience of Danish design. Therefore, Lange Production feels very proud and honored they are able to present Grete Jalk's best known pieces of furniture from 1963 - her molded plywood chair - the GJ Chair - and the GJ Nesting Table. They differ from any previous experiments with molded plywood by virtue of their sheer technical daring and, despite being composed of two conjoined pieces, the effect is organic and elegant.

Grete Jalk

Grete Jalk developed boldly curved bent-plywood models inspired by Aalto and Eames' design processes.
Henrik Lange wanted to get the production rights for the rare Fabricius & Kastholm Grasshopper chair, a long-time obsession of his. On Kastholm's end of the deal, he asked Lange to reintroduce the entire line and meet their original standards of quality. To do this, Lange worked from the original factory with the original tools.
