"Objects are made to be completed by the human mind." -Alvar Aalto

The invention by Alvar Aalto and the joiner Otto Korhonen of bending chair legs from solid wood made it possible for the Aalto stool to be conceived. Through this method Aalto achieved one of the main goals of modern furniture design; the mass production of furniture. Joints, which demanded a good deal of time and skilled workmanship, could be abandoned. The basic Aalto stool is 3-legged. Because of this, even large numbers of them can be stacked and stored in very little space.

Alvar Aalto was a highly talented architect and an eager spokesman for the international modernist movement. Aalto's designs were innovative and radical and became known for his experimental approach to bending wood, which greatly influenced American designers Charles & Ray Eames and Finnish-born Eero Saarinen. His style became known as humanist modernism. Alvar Aalto's dialogue with nature, architecture, design and the human being has become a living legacy.

Stool 60 features natural lacquered birch legs, the seat is available in your choice of birch veneer, black linoleum seat or white laminate seat. Stool 60 is also available lacquered all white or black.

Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was born in Finland. Thanks to his original style and unique talents, Aalto is one of the greatest names in modern architecture and design. During his career, he designed many buildings in different parts of the world: concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums, and private homes, including the Villa Mairea. His furniture and lamps, often starting out as a part of the buildings he designed, are produced together with Finnish Artek.
Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was "sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means." The founders of Artek advocated a new kind of environment for everyday life. They believed in a grand synthesis of the arts and wanted to make a difference in town planning as well as architecture and design.

I recently purchased this Alvar Aalto stool 60 which was designed clear back in 1933. It goes perfectly with the Armchair 400 otherwise known as the tank chair. With or without the chair the stool itself is wonderful.

Aalto Stool

I love these stools and have owned several for many years. I use them for all kinds of things: as end tables, stands for lights, and stands for ceramics or art. I even occasionally sit on them! I love the new colors Aalto has come out with. The green (a mint green) fits very nicely into my living room decor as a lamp stand.
