Design Verner Panton, 1960
Injection molded polypropylene
Made in Germany by Vitra

"Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton

Created by Verner Panton in 1960, and with the assistance of Vitra technicians a version was finally ready for series production in 1967. The Panton Chair is the very first ever to be constructed from one continuous piece of material. Since its market launch, the Panton Chair has undergone several production phases. Not until today was it possible to produce it in line with Panton's original idea, namely from consistently dyed, tough plastic with a matt surface and an affordable price. The Panton Chair has won various design awards world-wide and graces the collections of numerous renowned museums. Its expressive shape makes it a true 20th-century design icon. The chair offers great seating comfort thanks to the cantilever base, together with its shape and flexible materials. It can be used on its own or in groups.

Panton chairs are a solid plastic chair made in a single mold finished with a matt surface. Please note that special added additives slow down the fading process caused by ultraviolet rays. However, leaving the chair exposed to the sun for an extended period of time can result in color changes. We recommend not leaving the chair in the sun.

Verner Panton

Verner Panton (1926 – 1998) of Denmark created innovative, futuristic designs in vibrant colors with a variety of materials, especially plastic. Though his style was very "1960s," he regained popularity at the end of the 20th century. As of 2004, his most of his well-known furniture models are still in production. Already an experienced artist, Panton studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, graduating in 1951. During the first two years of his career, 1950–1952, he worked at the architectural practice of Arne Jacobsen, another Danish architect and furniture designer. Panton started his own design and architectural office and became well known for his innovative architectural proposals, including a collapsible house (1955), the Cardboard House and the Plastic House (1960). In the mid-1950's, Panton converted a Volkswagen bus into a mobile studio and travelled across Europe. He returned to Denmark in 1958 full of unconventional ideas, one of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. In 1960 Panton was the designer of the very first single-form injection-molded plastic chair. The Stacking chair or S chair, became his most famous design and was mass-produced.
Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of design. Following in the tradition of Charles & Ray Eames, who have influenced Vitra's approach to sustainability in many ways, product longevity is central to the company's contribution to sustainable development; short-lived styling is avoided at all costs. This can be seen most clearly in the classical pieces of furniture that have been used for decades, had several owners and have then even ended up as a part of a collection.

Been wanting some Panton chairs for a while and decided to go for it as I needed new dining chairs. They're even cooler than I anticipated and since they flex a little bit quite comfortable too! Definitely will be getting more in the future when I have space for a larger table.

We ordered the Panton Chair in ice gray, and it is a whimsical and delightful addition to our mid-century "modest" home. The chairs are incredibly comfortable and have an ease of movement for getting in and out of the dining table. Because of the polypropylene construction, they are easy to clean with a soft rag for any spills or messes.

our new black panton chair is perfect as a desk chair in our mcm kitchen. it feels like it will be very durable, and has a great proportion- our sense is that it works well for both kids and adults.

I received my chairs and I must say that they exceeded my expectations! I'm 5'10" and I fit comfortably in them. The matte finish looks awesome with my rustic dining table!

the verner panton "s" chair is a most amazing chair...... the first ever to be made of one continuous piece of material... it took years of development by vitra engineers to figure it out. aesthetically it is very holistic looking and seems one with the universe ;) i luv it. classic and semi-affordable... quality is high... it makes a big bang for the buck.
