enigma pendant lamp
Design Shoichi Uchiyama
Brushed & lacquered aluminum
Made in Denmark by Louis Poulsen
Enigma is a pendant pursuing the theme of indirect gentle light. It emits glare-free lighting to large rooms via its innovative yet simplistic form. The strong direct light from the halogen lamp hits each shade, is reflected and diffused with precision allowing a soft transmitted light spreading downward. This expression of transmitting light through the shades has never been found in other lighting fixtures.
Shoichi Uchiyama was born and bred in Tokyo. Since the foundation of Shoichi Uchiyama Design Office in 1977, he has been committed to the creation of lighting fixtures with glare-free indirect light that make objects beautiful, and allow people to feel the texture and depth of objects. He has won the iF Award in Germany and the Good Design Award in Japan for designs created by his unique talent.
Thin aluminum wires hold the shades perfectly horizontal, while creating the illusion of a floating luminaire. The light source is housed in the cone and is not visible from any angle - Injection-molded shades form a beautiful shape and the matte finishing of the upper side highlights the beauty of texture.
Enigma found its inspiration in Japanese lighting culture and shares the lighting philosophy of glare-free, comfortable light with all other fixtures from Louis Poulsen. The Enigma would make a beautiful addition to any residential or professional setting.
