the mamo nouchies babadul floor lamp
Design Dagmar Mombach, Ingo Maurer & Team, 2017
Paper, metal, stainless steel, silicone
Made in Germany by Ingo Maurer
Babadul is both a floor lamp and a light object, which emanates positively and unmistakably on spaces. The paper sheet hovers at the end of a slender metal rod, like a large abstracted flower petal. The Babadul LED Floor Lamp is height adjustable and is equipped with a dimmable LED module. The module was developed by Ingo Maurer GmbH especially for the MaMo Nouchies.
Like all papers of the MaMo Nouchies series, the lampshade consists of Japanese paper, which is treated in several steps in Dagmar Mombach's factory until it reaches the desired shape. The paper sheets act as light diffusers. The MaMo Nouchies' friendly presence provides more than light.
Dagmar Mombach & Ingo Maurer worked in collaboration to design the MaMo Nouchies Collection. The name is a combination of the two designers' names with a subtle nod to sculptor Isamu Noguchi, as he was a big inspiration for the collection and an expert in Akari, a traditional Japanese craft. The collection was an exploration in Ingo Maurer's passion for paper and Japanese art with Dagmar Mombach's technical development of a new method for paper folding. Mombach utilized traditional Japanese hand skills to manipulate sheets of paper though pulling and folding to create shape, form, and the desired effect. The MaMo Nouchies are as much art & sculpture as they are a functional piece of lighting.
Ingo Maurer started to design exceptional lamps, lighting systems, and objects beginning in the middle of the 1960s, which his company produces and distributes worldwide. Manual production by hand is an integral part of their corporate philosophy and all Ingo Maurer designs have been hand-made in their production facility in Munich, Germany since 1970.
