the mamo nouchies walking in the rain floor lamp
Design Ingo Maurer & Team, 2017
Paper, metal, stainless steel, silicone
Made in Germany by Ingo Maurer
A large, sculptural light object standing on two red feet. Three sheets of paper are arranged one above the other and remind of a cloak. The inspiration for this exclusive fixture comes from traditional Japanese raincoats woven from straw, which explains its appearance of a figure with feet and a head.
Like all papers of the MaMo Nouchies series, the lampshade consists of Japanese paper, which is treated in several steps in Dagmar Mombach's factory until it reaches the desired shape. For Walking In The Rain a lot of the unique paper material is used. Inside, two dimmable LED modules with a cooling element are installed. The module was developed by Ingo Maurer GmbH especially for the MaMo Nouchies. The light is warm and soft, and can hardly be distinguished from conventional halogen light. The paper sheets act as light diffusers. Walking In The Rain's friendly presence provides more than light.
Dagmar Mombach & Ingo Maurer worked in collaboration to design the MaMo Nouchies Collection. The name is a combination of the two designers' names with a subtle nod to sculptor Isamu Noguchi, as he was a big inspiration for the collection and an expert in Akari, a traditional Japanese craft. The collection was an exploration in Ingo Maurer's passion for paper and Japanese art with Dagmar Mombach's technical development of a new method for paper folding. Mombach utilized traditional Japanese hand skills to manipulate sheets of paper though pulling and folding to create shape, form, and the desired effect. The MaMo Nouchies are as much art & sculpture as they are a functional piece of lighting.
Ingo Maurer started to design exceptional lamps, lighting systems, and objects beginning in the middle of the 1960s, which his company produces and distributes worldwide. Manual production by hand is an integral part of their corporate philosophy and all Ingo Maurer designs have been hand-made in their production facility in Munich, Germany since 1970.
