The Soft Big Easy Chair

by Ron Arad, from Moroso

the soft big easy chair

Design Ron Arad, 1991
Polyurethane foam, internal wood frame, upholstery
Made in Italy by Moroso

Forms that speak volumes. A collection that, from Big Easy, steel chair designed by Ron Arad in 1988, shows that a volume, as simple form, can be translated, without compromising the design principles, through a reinterpretation of materials and production processes. The model obtained from a constructive gesture becomes industrial production; the visual softness and fullness of the volumes, comfort. Big Easy explores the rotational molding and the use of polyethylene; Soft version in the cold-foaming and, with the polyester fiber cladding, the transformation of the tactile surface; in the elements of the collection, the morphology and the dynamic form.

Hailed as one of the foremost designers of the 20th Century, Ron Arad was born in Tel Aviv and studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art before moving to London and the Architectural Association where he studied under Peter Cook, founder of Archigram. Ron Arad has successfully established a unique design style using unorthodox combinations of materials and concepts.

Ron Arad

Hailed as one of the foremost designers of the 20th Century, Tel Aviv native Ron Arad attended the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem from 1971-73 before moving to London to study under Peter Cook, founder of Archigram, at the Architectural Association. In 1981, he scoured a scrapyard and combined a car seat with a structural tubing frame to create the postmodern Rover Chair, whose popularity significantly launched his career. Ron Arad’s unique design style would continue to use unorthodox combinations of materials and concepts. In 1994, he created the Bookworm bookshelf, a sturdy but flexible shelf that can coil or take on limitless shape. Employing bimorphic shapes from steel remained a trademark of Arad’s works.
Agostino Moroso, with his wife, Diana, founded the Moroso company in 1952 with an artisanal approach to making sofas, armchairs and furnishing accessories. Their iconic designs have propelled them within the upholstered furniture market, with help from a long list of well known designers: Ron Arad, Patricia Urquiola, Ross Lovegrove, Konstantin Grcic, Alfredo Haberli, Toshiyuki Kita, Marcel Wanders and others. Each piece maintains a noticeable Moroso style while representing other cultures as well. Its international outlook has landed Moroso into the MoMA in New York, Le Palais de Tokyo, the Grand Palais in Paris.
