ml10097 egyptian table
Design Mogens Lassen, 1940
Solid wood, natural wood veneer, brass details
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son
Mogens Lassen designed the ML10097 Egyptian Table after being inspired by folding stands found in Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. The table was first shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1940.
The ML10097 Egyptian Table was designed to easily collapse for storage with the release of a small brass sliding latch beneath the tabletop. It is a flexible coffee table that exemplifies the functionalism present in classic furniture types. For Lassen and his contemporaries, function was paramount. Their approach, strongly influenced by Kaare Klint, often began with the careful study and refinement of long-existing archetypes such as safari-style knockdown chairs, British Windsor and Chippendale chairs, and flexible, practical tables like the Egyptian Table. These clear, proven furniture types appealed to mid-century design and architecture visionaries, upholding their core belief that intelligent, purposeful design never goes out of style.
Architect Mogens Lassen created works rooted in cubist architectural ideals inspired by Le Corbusier. Considered a pioneer of Danish functionalism, Lassen's designs showcased his ability to express ideas through diverse materials. His simple, functional wooden furniture, like the folding Egyptian Table, have gone on to become furniture classics, while his 1930s works in steel continue to serve as original examples of the innovations of international modernism.
