ch78 mama bear chair
by Hans Wegner, from Carl Hansen & Son
ch78 mama bear chair
Design Hans Wegner, 1954
Solid beech frame, upholstery, solid wood legs & arms
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son
The creative and innovative mind of the legendary furniture designer Hans J. Wegner conceived the CH78 Mama Bear Chair in 1954. An antidote to the often-heavy lounge chairs of his time, Mama Bear's sculptural silhouette is defined by a series of inviting curves that offer up a warm embrace. The iconic design is now reissued by Carl Hansen & Son, as a tribute to the man often referred to as the master of the chair.
A lesson in form and function, craftsmanship and courage, the CH78 Lounge Chair, affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, balances soft, supportive curves with dynamic geometric shapes. Frame, armrests, and legs are crafted for stability from solid FSC-certified wood and offered in a range of beautiful upholstery. An optional headrest in leather or corresponding fabric, the result is a sculptural piece of functional design that is equally at home in a living room as it is in a hotel lobby.
Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime - many of them considered masterpieces. The core of Wegner's legacy is his focus on bringing the inner workings - the soul - of the furniture to the exterior, where the simplicity and functionality can be appreciated.

Hans Wegner
Hans Wegner’s thoughtful high quality work contributed to the popularity of Danish Modern design. His style is described as Organic Functionalism. He designed over 500 different chairs with many famous icons among them. Wegner worked as a cabinet maker's apprentice and soon attended the Danish School of Arts & Crafts and the Architectural Academy.
Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949 and launched a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to Hans Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today as a Master of Danish Modern Design.
