refectory extending table 405

Design Matthew Hilton
Solid black walnut, white oak or ash wood
Made in Portugal by De La Espada

Refectory is a monastic, utilitarian, and robust extending table with a pragmatic, functional design that embraces the passage of time. A very tough yet elegant table in solid timber. Rather than conventional extension mechanisms, the table makes innovative use of linear guides - normally used for accurate and smooth movement of machine components - enabling quiet, maintenance-free operation. The solid wood extension leaves are stored inside the tabletop when not in use. Designed by Matthew Hilton for his eponymous brand, and manufactured by De La Espada craftsmen.

De La Espada is a groundbreaking design management firm and leading modern woodworker with a dedicated factory in Portugal. Highly skilled craftspeople combine noble materials, traditional joinery, handcraft and advanced technology to realize each design to the highest standard. De La Espada puts the author at the forefront and values the modern artisan. They partner with designers who art direct, curate and design their own product lines, and support them through manufacture and distribution.

Matthew Hilton graduated with a degree in Furniture Design from Kingston Polytechnic in 1979. He went on to design products for a variety of well known manufacturers. In 1985 Matthew set up the Matthew Hilton Design Studio. He has also been given the highest honor in the field of Industrial Design in the United Kingdom, by being named a Royal Designer for Industry in 2003. In September 2007, Matthew established his own brand, Matthew Hilton Limited as a place he could have complete creative control. In 2008, he was named Designer of the Year by Elle Decoration at the British Design Awards.

Refectory extending table is offered in American black walnut, American white oak, or European Ash in a range of finishes.
