arne jacobsen oksen lounge chair & ottoman
by Arne Jacobsen, from Fritz Hansen
arne jacobsen oksen lounge chair & ottoman
Design Arne Jacobsen, 1966
Wood frame, molded foam, steel, upholstery
Made by Fritz Hansen
"If I have a philosophy, it must be to sit at my drawing board." -Arne Jacobsen
Known for his organic and soft lines in designs like the Swan and the Ant, Arne Jacobsen surprised design connoisseurs all over the world when he first introduced Oksen in 1966. Reflecting its name - meaning 'the bull' in Danish - Oksen was big, bold and powerful. All three features characterize Oksen in 2017.
Unlike many of Arne Jacobsen's other designs, Oksen was not designed for a specific architectural project. It took Jacobsen nothing less than five years to develop the Oksen design. Oksen was a project he repeatedly returned to with many variations in the years 1962-66 before it finally took shape in 1966. The chair was considered quite rare among critics due to its short original production period as well as its controversial yet powerful expression. The voluminous Oksen represents edge and personality and like its predecessor - the Egg - it inhabits a room like no one else. Indeed it can be defined as the largest and most distinctive chair that Arne Jacobsen ever designed.
The chair is both distinctive and definite in its language, and the inspiration is clearly the American recliner type that Jacobsen had seen in the United States. Oksen is also sculptural but in a completely different tight form and designed in a style that is in line between the soft royal furniture and the tighter Oxford furniture in Fritz Hansen's collection.
Whilst the chair looks graphical and almost facetted shaped when you look at it from the side and from the back, the actual seating part is softened by a foam and down seat and foam layered neck. The seat will soften in time as the chair slowly ages with beauty. Furthermore, the back of Oksen is hand-stitched just like the Egg while the front side is sowed.
Oksen lounge chair is offered in three different leather types: Classic and Elegance in the colors Black and Walnut as well as in Genuine in the color black only. The 5-star base is available in black powder coated aluminum or satin polished aluminum with a satin polished steel pedestal. The base can be specified with a return mechanism. Matching footstool with a 4-star base is also available. Footstool does not swivel.
oksen lounge chair: 39.8" w | 34.3" d | 45.2" h | seat: 17" h | arms: 22.8"h
oksen footstool: 20.4" w | 20.4" d | 15.7" h

Arne Jacobsen
Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen is remembered for his contribution to architectural functionalism and the worldwide success he enjoyed with chair designs. Jacobsen was admitted to the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under leading architects and designers. After completing architecture school he worked at Poul Holsoe's architectural practice. In 1929 he won a Danish Architect's Association competition for designing the "House of the Future" and Jacobsen was recognized as an ultra-modern architect. The Egg, Swan and Series 7 chairs produced in collaboration with Fritz Hansen propelled both names into design fame.
Fritz Hansen has become a natural part of Danish and International design history. Fritz Hansen is characterized by craftsmanship, unique design and a sense of premium quality. Furniture designers such as Arne Jacobsen & Poul Kjaerholm have contributed to the collection with beautifully shaped designs and the use of innovative techniques and new materials.
