Design George Nelson, 1947
Steel skeleton, self-webbing soft plastic, solid walnut
Made in USA by Modernica

It was in 1947 that George Nelson became inspired by a self webbing material used to moth-ball ships in New York and he convinced himself it would be perfect for lighting. He made a metal frame, tracked down the source of the webbing material and by the next day he created a big glowing sphere and the Bubble Lamp was born. Modernica has faithfully produced the bubble lamps to the exact specifications using the original Howard Miller factory tooling. Six feet of white lamp cord included.

Each sconce has a solid walnut wall-mount and includes 12-feet of cord with counterweight for height adjustment. There is an on/off pull chain with a solid walnut end cap.

George Nelson

George Nelson (1908–1986) was an American industrial designer, and one of the founders of American Modernism. While Director of Design for the Herman Miller furniture company, both Nelson, and his design studio, George Nelson Associates, Inc., designed much of the 20th century's most iconic modernist furniture. George Nelson attended Yale University, not originally intending to become an architect. He happened upon the architecture school while ducking into the building to get out of the rain, and was impressed by an exhibition inside. He graduated with a degree in architecture in 1928. During his final year at Yale, Nelson was hired by the architecture firm Adams and Prentice as a drafter.

Modernica’s first official year as a furniture manufacturer came in 1989, after Frank and Jay Novak purchased 12,000 discarded plastic shell chairs and created bases and shock mounts for them. The shells had been discarded by Century Plastics, after Herman Miller discontinued their production of fiberglass chairs. Modernica founded their company on the heels of the North American Modernist movement and perpetuated the idea of the burgeoning modernist California lifestyle.

Beautiful construction and materials
, less than a month ago.
The quality of construction and materials, easy of assembly and installation and beauty of this piece are outstanding. The wood mount is lovely, and the bubble-shaped cover is impeccable. Perhaps the only draw back is the white veneered cord which dangles from the bottom and could be a challenge to conceal in the design of the room. We have chosen to use a voice activated power control to avoid using the pull chain switch, but the manual switch is functional and easy to use.
