Design Studioilse
Solid chestnut, copper, upholstery
Made in Portugal by De La Espada

Low Bench is reassuringly familiar but carefully detailed. Crafted in solid chestnut, carefully chosen with knots, and detailed with copper feet. Optional leather pad softens the seating area. Furniture you can sit on together, but still leaves room for the individual.

Chestnut ranges in color from a light honey to a deep golden brown. The grain is dark and linear when it is finished naturally. Painted chestnut is painted pure white, while the dark and linear grains remain visible. Chestnut, a prized hardwood, is decay-resistant and extremely stable making it an excellent choice for furniture. The chestnut for this piece is carefully selected with knots adding character to every piece.

The timber is sustainably harvested in Europe. The trees on the farms are methodically cared for, ensuring exceptionally strong planks of the highest quality. Mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing and lap joints combined with slow-drying wood glue that seeps deep into the fibres of the solid wood create strong, unbreakable bonds adding long life to every piece of furniture.

Available in solid chestnut with a Danish oil finish or painted pure white. Copper feet. Optional leather pad. Please note: this bench always comes with three holes spaced lengthwise across the center of the seat for the purpose of securing a seatpad.

De La Espada was founded by Luis De Oliveira and Fatima De La Espada in 1993. Hailing from Porto and Madrid respectively and educated in London, the founders opened the first De La Espada store in London in 1996, when there was comparatively little quality contemporary furniture in the city. De La Espada's dedicated factory in Portugal specializes in hand crafted traditional construction methods to create modern furniture with timeless appeal and the warmth of solid wood. The De La Espada aesthetic evolved from influences including the Arts and Crafts movement, architects such as Tadao Ando, John Pawson and Alvaro Siza, as well as Scandinavian design from the 1950’s.
