hans wegner ch88p stacking chair with upholstered seat
by Hans Wegner, from Carl Hansen & Son
hans wegner ch88p stacking chair with upholstered seat
Design Hans Wegner, 1955
Solid wood back, upholstery, steel
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son
To mark the 100th anniversary of Hans J. Wegner's birth, Carl Hansen & Son has launched Wegner's CH88 chair - a 1955 design that has, to date, existed only as a prototype.
The CH88P is versatile both in terms of its appearance and usability thanks to its numerous finish, frame, and room placement options. Characteristically, the upper structure features a steam-bent wooden backrest for back support, with slight curvatures of the backrest's ends providing a natural resting place for the arms. The steel frame, with straight back legs, supports an oval-shaped wooden seat. This blend of materials, combined with a minimalist design, results in a light, organic, industrial expression. And the new, stackable design (stackable up to 4 chairs) offers a valuable benefit. The CH88 is available in beech and oak in a range of finishes. The frame is available in stainless steel, powder coated or chrome, and the seat with optional leather or textile upholstery.
Hans J Wegner trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office in Gentofte and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers´ Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The Royal Society of Arts, London made him an 'Honorary Royal Designers for Industry' in 1959.

Hans Wegner
Hans Wegner’s thoughtful high quality work contributed to the popularity of Danish Modern design. His style is described as Organic Functionalism. He designed over 500 different chairs with many famous icons among them. Wegner worked as a cabinet maker's apprentice and soon attended the Danish School of Arts & Crafts and the Architectural Academy.
Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949 and launched a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to Hans Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today as a Master of Danish Modern Design.
