.05 chair

Design Maarten Van Severen, 2000
Polyurethane foam, integrated leaf springs, tubular steel
Made in Germany by Vitra

The principle of the cantilevered chair dates back to the 1930s. The .05 appears to be the purest realization of the cantilevered concept in chair design. The frame construction offers a high degree of comfort by responding to pressure with springy resilience, and the flexible tensile shell makes the seat as comfortable as a cushion.

The aesthetic hallmark of the .05 chair is its sleek, reductive shape. The resilient seat shell, made of integral skin foam with embedded leaf springs, is combined with a cantilever base that flexes slightly when the sitter leans back to provide an unexpected level of comfort. The .05 chair is suited for outdoor use and is also available in a stacking version.

Formal clarity and simplicity are distinguishing aesthetic features of Maarten Van Severen's designs. His work, handproduced in his workshop in Ghent Belgium, reflects his quest for perfection in form, detail and fabrication. Their appearance is restrained and elegant. Every element is structurally motivated and reduced to its essential form. Maarten works in a variety of different materials: aluminum and ply to bakelite and polyester.

Note: special additives retard the fading of colors due to UV radiation. However, if the chair is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, the color may change over time. We recommend limited exposure to sunlight.

Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of design. Following in the tradition of Charles & Ray Eames, who have influenced Vitra's approach to sustainability in many ways, product longevity is central to the company's contribution to sustainable development; short-lived styling is avoided at all costs. This can be seen most clearly in the classical pieces of furniture that have been used for decades, had several owners and have then even ended up as a part of a collection.

this chair is not only beautiful it is extremely comfortable. we ordered two more since we got a larger dining table and have had our other chairs for almost 10 years. the scale of the chair also makes it perfect for an apartment. easy care too. after our one-year-old flings food on them we wipe them off and they’re good to go!
