organic conference chair
Design Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen, 1940
Laminate seat shell, black ash legs, upholstery
Made in Germany by Vitra
For the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created an entire series of versions of the Organic chair, each intended for a different sitting position. The designs were ahead of their time, but never went into production owing to a lack of technology. Not until after 1950 was it possible to produce (and sell) larger numbers of organically molded seat shells, such as the Eames' famous Plastic Armchair or Saarinen's Tulip chair. While the Organic chair is a comfortable small reading armchair, the Organic Highback has a higher backrest and neck support. In addition, the armrests and seat area are broader and longer.
The range is now expanded with the new Organic Conference, featuring a slightly higher and forward-tilted shell. this makes it well-suited for use with tables, as in the dining room or at conferences and meetings.
Available in an assortment of vibrantly colored fabrics with black Ash or natural oak legs.

Eames
Husband and wife team Charles & Ray Eames played a major role in the world of modern architecture, furniture design, graphic design, art and film. Charles and Ray designed prize winning furniture that expanded upon the wood molding inspiration of Alvar Aalto. Ray Eames began as an abstract expressionist painter and has a painting in the Whitney Museum permanent collection.
Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of spaces through the power of design. Product longevity is central to the company goal of sustainable development. Short lived styling is avoided in favor of classical pieces of furniture that can be used for decades, have several owners and end up as part of a collection.
