mercury suspension lamp
Design Ross Lovegrove, 2008
Die-cast aluminum, Thermoplastic
Made in Italy by Artemide
"A ceiling fixture that places a floating assembly of large pebbles below a simple modern aluminum disc. These in turn reflect each other, bouncing light between their taught bio-morphic surfaces and reflecting the environment around them. During the day, the piece acts as a sculptural object reflecting the dynamics of natural light and movement of people around them." - Ross Lovegrove
The Mercury suspension lamp features a pale grey, die-cast aluminum lighting unit with reflective units (pebbles) made of injection-molded thermoplastic material with a polished chrome finish and reflective units containing the light source are in die-cast aluminum with a polished chrome finish. Clear electrical cord and stainless steel cables with mounting to standard electrical junction boxes. LED version is dimmable and requires 2 extra wires for dimming in electrical hard wire installations.
Ross Lovegrove studied design at Manchester Polytechnic and subsequently trained at the Royal College of Art in London. At frog design, he contributed to the design of the Sony Walkman and Apple computers. As an in-house designer for Knoll International in Paris, Lovegrove worked on the Alessandri office system. As a co-member of the Atelier de Nimes, along with Philippe Starck and Jean Nouvel, he acted as a design consultant to Luis Vuitton, Cacharel, Dupont and Hermés. In 1990, he created Studio X in London. Lovegrove is inspired by forms of the natural world, the possibilities of new manufacturing techniques and the ability to evoke an emotional response in users.
