Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity in his Tulip Collection. Drawing on his training as a sculptor, Saarinen designed the innovative and elegant series of tables, stools, and chairs in 1956.
In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," explained Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." In his pedestal collection, which includes dining, coffee and side tables in a wide range of sizes and finishes. Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award.
Born to world famous architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art Director Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Eero Saarinen was surrounded by design his whole life. After meeting Florence Knoll at Cranbrook, Saarinen went on to design many of Knoll's most recognizable pieces, including the Tulip collection, the Womb chair, and the 70 Series of seating. In addition to these achievements, Saarinen became a leader of the second-generation Modernists.
The Saarinen Tulip Table Collection features a beveled tabletop and gracefully shaped cast-aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid, finished in a tough, abrasion-resistant Rilsan® finish. The tabletop is offered in luxurious marbles, veneers, and laminates, all of which create elegant surfaces for home.

Join the Trade Professionals ProgramA nice side table, and very elegant . One disappointment with it. As this little table is shipped in two boxes, one containing the base and one containing the top. They are well protected and arrived unscathed. The laminate top was made in Italy. Sadly, the cast aluminum base was made in China. Given the price Knoll sets for these things, it really isn’t too much to ask that the entire table be manufactured in countries where cost-cutting is not in the decision making process.
This Saarinen design of table is like no other famous mid century modern design. The base is sturdy, stable and silky smooth. The laminate top is incredibly well-manufactured, so much so that one has to remind themselves its laminate! Frankly, its the best choice for a top by presenting the table as a flowing, uninterrupted piece of sculpture....that you can set your drink on. (Please use a coaster though!)
