Linear yet organic in expression, the P3 Lounge Chair and the P3S Chaise Longue by Italian designer Tito Agnoli are among the finest examples of mid-century rattan design. More than 60 years after their debut with Bonacina 1889, GUBI reintroduces these sculptural pieces, faithfully crafted in partnership with the original rattan masters and, for the first time, adapted for outdoor living.

Designed in 1964, the P3 and P3S capture the elegance and clarity that defined Italy's postwar design renaissance. Architect Tito Agnoli, known for his refined Modernist sensibility and material intelligence, collaborated closely with Bonacina 1889, the revered rattan specialists from Brianza, the heart of Italian furniture-making, to explore the sculptural possibilities of handwoven rattan. The P3 Lounge Chair offers a light, upright posture ideal for relaxed conversation, whereas the P3S Chaise Longue invites near-horizontal repose, a graceful balance of geometry and softness. Together, they express the sophistication of 1960s Italian modernism and today's renewed appetite for crafted materials and seamless indoor-outdoor living.

Tito Agnoli's architectural training is evident in every curve and contour. Each piece begins with a continuous tubular steel frame, galvanized for strength and weather resistance. Around this structure, skilled artisans weave hundreds of meters of split rattan, creating a surface that is both supportive and yielding. The apparent simplicity of the form conceals its complexity: each curve of the frame must be precisely bent and welded before it is wrapped in the woven skin. The result is a design reduced to its essence, structure and softness in perfect balance, every detail revealing the hand of the maker.

Handwoven rattan defines both designs. Each P3 or P3S takes several days to complete, with most of that time devoted to weaving the continuous surface by hand. Around 200 meters of split rattan are woven into each P3 Lounge Chair, nearly double for the P3S Chaise Longue. No two pieces are identical; their subtle variations reveal the rhythms of human craft. The weaving technique gives each surface its strength, flexibility, and character, ensuring that every piece can endure for decades and be repaired, restored, and cherished across generations. For the indoor edition, the artisans use split natural rattan finished with a light honey-colored stain that deepens beautifully with age. For the outdoor edition, GUBI employs high-performance synthetic rattan, an extruded polyethylene fiber that recreates the warmth and texture of natural rattan while offering exceptional durability outdoors. Both materials ensure ergonomic comfort and gentle lumbar support.
