womb lounge chair & ottoman

Design Eero Saarinen, 1948
Upholstery, fiberglass & steel
Made in USA by Knoll

Eero Saarinen's 1948 Womb chair, made exclusively for Knoll, displays the Finnish-born designer's flair for challenging rules, breaking molds and setting new standards for comfortable modern design. Saarinen designed the groundbreaking Womb Chair at Florence Knoll's request for "a chair that was like a basket full of pillows... something I could really curl up in."

With its polished chrome, black or gold plated base and frame upholstered in fabric over a fiberglass shell, the Womb chair is designed to facilitate a relaxed sitting posture, providing emotional comfort and a sense of security - hence the name "Womb." One of the most celebrated modern furniture designs, the Saarinen Womb chair is truly a chair you can curl up in.

Eero Saarinen

Finnish-American Eero Saarinen was famous for varying his style according to the demands of the project. His father taught at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where Eero took classes and formed relationships with fellow students Charles & Ray Eames, and Florence Knoll. Saarinen studied sculpture at the Academy de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and later at the Yale School of Architecture. He joined the US Military, where he was assigned to draw illustrations for bomb disassembly manuals and to provide designs for the Situation Room in the White House. He founded his own office in 1950. His first success was the Tulip Chair produced by the Knoll company. He won the design competition for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis aka the Gateway Arch.
Hans Knoll founded the Knoll company in New York City in 1938 one year after immigrating from Germany. He hired Florence Schust who had worked for Gropius and Breuer and the two were married in 1946. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe including the Barcelona Chair. Knoll commissioned Eero Saarinen to design the Tulip chair. Artists such as Harry Bertoia, Jens Risom, and Isamu Noguchi also collaborated with Knoll.
