geen-a floor lamp

Design Ferruccio Laviani, 2020
Polyester powder-coated steel
Made in Italy by Kartell

"Why Geen-a? There were many reasons why I ended up designing this lamp, but it's possible to summarize them all under the simple banner of 'the pleasure of reading'. Geen-a is what people used to call my mother Giacomina, who I always remember with a book in her hand, reading intently. This is a small tribute to her and a homage to one pleasure that can never be replaced by technology. The sensuality of touching the paper, the smell of the pages, the curiosity triggered by the cover, the unique ability of books to extract us from reality and transport us into fantastical worlds and situations, using nothing but our own brains." - Ferruccio Laviani

Geen-a is Kartell's reading lamp, supplementing the brand's lighting range with a product designed for this specific purpose. The simple lines conceal a real sense of attitude, while the clean shape has a familiar yet intriguing effect. The piece consists of a base, a light shade, three LED bulbs, a stem and a handle for easy transportation. This is a simple lamp, just as reading is one of life's simple pleasures.

F. Laviani

Ferruccio Laviani (b. 1960) of Cremona, Italy graduated from Politecnico di Milano in architecture in 1986 and created industrial design objects, mainly lamps or lighting systems known for colored transparent plastics. From 1986-1991, he was a member of the De Lucchi studio, designing for various companies such as Credito Bergamasco, Mandarina Duck, Memphis, Olivetti, and Swatch. He came into prominence as the Memphis group began to leave its mark on International design. In 1991, he showed his silverware from the Morandotti collection at the "European Capitals of New Design” exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The same year, he began a collaboration with Kartell and is now an artistic director and consultant.
The Kartell image and history are best described through the company's products. The development, corporate strategies, attention paid to technology and design can be appreciated by observing the products Kartell has produced. Kartell products express the language and the atmosphere of the period in which they were created and at the same time they are "contemporary articles". They incorporate many values and messages and this is why they have become an integral part of our design world.
