Design Tobia Scarpa, 1962
Solid ash wood, steel straps, foam, upholstery
Made by Knoll

When Tobia Scarpa first designed the Bastiano Sofa in 1962, he wanted to provide seating that was sophisticated and elegant, yet casual and comfortable. In keeping with the spirit that inspired it, the Bastiano Collection has been adapted to the proportions of a more contemporary domestic environment. The collection offers wider and more relaxed designs to build on the extremely comfortable and elegantly informal concept that generated it.

The son of the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa trained in Venice before launching his career as a designer of lamps, furniture, and glass objects. In the early 1960s, he began to design modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier. He and his wife Afra, designed for several of the biggest names in Italian design including Cassina and Gavina SpA,which his father directed.

The Bastiano collection features a solid ash frame, stained with an ebonized finish. The seat support frame is wood with coated steel straps. Seat, back and arm cushions have a variable foam core with polyester fiber wrap and down. All cushions have zippers. Arm and seat cushions have a strap attached to a recessed hidden hook in the wood structure to ensure the cushions remain in an upright position. The seat and back are connected with an removable pin.

33.8" w | 30.7" d | 27.5" h | seat: 16.1" h | 90 lbs.

Hans Knoll, the son of a pioneer German furniture manufacturer, founded the Knoll company in New York City in 1938, one year after immigrating from Germany. He hired Florence Schust, a Cranbrook graduate who had worked for Gropius and Breuer, and the two were married in 1946. The next year, they opened a textiles division and showroom that was flanked with some of the worlds leading designers. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and producing them to their original specifications. This included the 1929 Barcelona Chair. They also commissioned Eero Saarinen to design the now iconic Tulip chair, and hold the rights to Marcel Breuer's seminal Wassily Chair. Artists such as Harry Bertoia, Jens Risom, and Isamu Noguchi would also collaborate with Knoll.
