mangas original mini caramelo rug
by Patricia Urquiola, from GAN
mangas original mini caramelo rug
Design Patricia Urquiola
New wool hand loom
Made by GAN
The development of Mangas Original took four years of research, in which GAN had to find the tools and create the complex work method that allows the weaving of these pieces on a manual loom, despite their changing textures, threads, and widths.
Patricia Urquiola took as aesthetic reference the classic knitted wool sweater, to design a collection with lots of volume that could combine different textures. Some rug models have a very elongated shape and large dimensions, others are of medium or small size. All of them can be combined as if they were modular pieces. In addition, they can also be hung on the wall as a tapestry, and in the case of larger pieces, some can cover part of the floor and the wall at the same time.
This is the Mini Caramelo rug from the Mangas Original collection, a piece of small dimensions that can be used individually or in combination with the other mini-sized rugs of the collection to configure a larger rug. This design blends six different textures and techniques, each made with different tones.

Patricia Urquiola
Born in Oviedo, Patricia Urquiola attended the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Madrid, where she graduated in 1989 having completed a thesis with Achille Castiglioni. From 1990 to 1992, she was assistant lecturer on his courses. Between 1990 and 1996, she worked with Vico Magistretti for the new product development office of De Padova and signed the products: “Flower,” “Loom sofa,” “Chaise,” and “Chaise Longue.”
GAN was born when José Gandía-Blasco reinvented his family business in the 1980s betting strongly on design and incorporating the world of rugs into their offerings. In 2004 he partnered with his friend Mapi Millet, with whom he shares close tastes and sensibilities, to reshape the brand. GAN uses a production system that preserves tradition while renewing craftsmanship allowing artisan practices to evolve and expand. GAN rugs are made by hand in India, slowly, piece by piece, by expert craftsman using some of the best natural fibers available - cotton, jute, wool - as well as recycled fibers.
