blur rug
Design Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
100% hand spun Afghan wool, Kilim, hand loomed technique
Handmade by Nanimarquina
The sequence of geometric shapes and repetition are definitive hallmarks of the Bouroullec brothers. Their mastery, meticulousness, and tireless ability to always go a step further, has led them to work on Blur, a collection that offers two different readings. When viewing the rug from afar, an indefinite, unfocused surface is apparent, that gives its name to the collection. Nevertheless, upon approaching the rug, lines and rhythmic rhombuses in different proportions are revealed, in the purest kinetic style.
This blurred effect has been achieved by inverting the sense in which the kilims are traditionally woven, which makes the process much more laborious. This change in weaving causes the lines to be blurred, mixing two colors unevenly, creating an aged rug, reminiscent of the past.
Originating from Afghanistan's native sheep, this wool's fiber, called Ghazni, is famous for reaching 30cm long. This exceptional length and its slightly undulating and thin structure provides a high resistance and special softness. Like the other wools, it is an elastic fibre that ages well, which combined with its beauty makes it ideal for weaving carpets.
Kilim is a technique which uses a manual loom to create fabrics which mix bright sections of color. Knotted by hand, this process produces flat rugs with irregularities caused by the manual twisting of the wool thread. It is characterized by geometric motifs.
Nanimarquina was founded in 1987 focusing on offering rugs to a world that is interested in creativity, quality and innovation. Today, Nanimarquina is one of the leading companies in the contemporary rugs sector. Under the premise of "reuse, reduce, recycle", they pay the utmost attention to caring for and preserving the environment that surrounds us. All of their rugs are hand made in countries with great traditions of craftsmanship. Nanimarquina also guarantees that no child labor is used in the manufacturing of their rugs. They also collaborate actively with organizations to further improve standards of living for those directly involved in the process of producing their rugs.
The Blur rugs are hand loomed with a kilim technique using 100% Afghan wool. This collection can be made in custom sizes respecting the original proportions of the standard size. Anti-slide pad included.
