Bellhop Table Lamp

bellhop table lamp

bellhop table lamp

Design Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 2018
Polycarbonate, photo-etched opal diffuser
Made by Flos

"The Bellhop began when we designed a table lamp for the new London Design Museum. The table top Bellhop gives the user ultimate flexibility as a portable lamp. We worked with FLOS and adapted the simple archetype into a series of lamps including wall, pendant and an outdoor. Bellhop casts an atmospheric pool of light and the portable version is like a modern day candle." - E. Barber & J. Osgerby

This sleek tabletop lamp was originally created by renowned designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for the London Design Museum. Evoking the spirit of a candle, the Bellhop can be carried from room to room, casting a pool of direct light wherever it goes. Portable and wireless, it charges via a micro USB-C and holds a charge for up to 24 hours.

Eames

Husband and wife team Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames played a major role in the world of modern architecture and furniture, as well as working in industrial and graphic design, fine art, and film. Charles completed two years of study at Washington University in St. Louis. With his design and life partner Ray, he designed prize-winning furniture that expanded upon the wood molding techniques of Alvar Aalto. Ray-Bernice Alexandra Kaiser Eames began as an abstract expressionist painter, having graduated from Bennett Women’s College in Millbrook, NY and later studying under Hans Hoffman while living in New York City. She co-founded the American Abstract Artists and has a painting in the Whitney museum’s permanent collection.
The furniture manufacturers and entrepreneurs Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina founded Flos which became one of the leading Italian light manufacturers in the second half of the 20th century. Its origins lay in the energy of Arturo Eisenkeil who, in 1959, was seeking to find applications for a new, plastic-based material that he was importing to Italy from the United States. Called ‘cocoon’, it was a spray-on plastic coating that Gavina and Cassina recognized as having potential for lighting design. From the outset, Flos established its reputation through its innovative lighting designs from Achille Castiglioni. The collaboration with Achille Castiglioni continued through the '90s, and in 1992 he introduced the "family of products" concept to the market with the Brera series. At the same time, Flos continued to scout for emerging talent at an international level. The first Philippe Starck lamp, Ârà, was produced in 1998, followed by the Miss Sissi lamp, Romeo Moon, and Archimoon series.
