Design Coca Cola & Emeco, 2016
111 recycled PET plastic bottles
Made in USA by Emeco

"When you recycle a plastic bottle, you're doing something good. When you recycle 111 of them, you're doing something great. Help your bottle become something extraordinary again."

About four years ago Coca-Cola went to Emeco with a proposal to make the classic Navy chair out rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate- recycled plastic bottles). Their new recycling plant in South Carolina was processing thousands of plastic bottles a day and they were looking for ways to show the value of recycled plastic with beautifully designed products - ultimately encouraging more recycling. Everywhere else in the world people recycle about 80% of their bottles while in the US we recycled only about 20%.

Requiring a state-of-art mold, the new 111 Navy Chair™ includes the original stretcher (structural brace) below the seat to assure authenticity as well as creating great structural integrity. The 111 Navy Chair™ carries a 5-Year structural guarantee and is available in a variety of colors. Snow, Flint and Red and can be used indoors or outdoors. The new chair has a distinctive, "velvet" finish that is scratch resistant and passes California and UK Fire Codes, along with BIFMA structural testing for commercial use.

Founded in 1944 by Wilton C. Dinges, the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) holds on tightly to their foundation of craftsmanship, utilitarian design, and history. Their origins lie in a collaboration with the aluminum giant Alcoa to develop an indestructible and useful chair for military use in Navy submarines and warships. Today Emeco is led by CEO Gregg Buchbinder who sums up their vision as design plus craftsmanship. Looking toward the future, Buchbinder has brought in Philippe Starck and Frank Gehry. With Starck, they developed the Hudson Chair. With Gehry, they created the acclaimed Superlight chair. In 2008, Emeco launched the Nine-O Collection by Ettore Sottsass and in the following year the Morgans chair by Andree Putman, designed for the restored Morgans Hotel.

We bought 4 of these counter height stools. They look great and feel good when sitting on them. I'm happy for the purchase as I've been looking for just the right stool to fit my relaxed style. The stools I replaced didn't have backs on them which made sitting uncomfortable.
